Character name: Bruce Wayne
Fandom: Batman Beyond / DCAU
Timeline: Post-series and movie, pre-epilogue
Age: 81
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: Filthy stinking rich, very intelligent, possibly the world’s greatest detective, master of uncountable martial arts styles, great designer even to this day… super-paranoia?
How would they use their abilities?: He doesn’t, not anymore. At most, he’d fight for self-defense, and maybe do some analysis if he’s in the mood.
Appearance: In his prime, he was about 6’3”, though he’s shrunken with age and hunched over most of the time. His hair is white and receding. He is nowhere near as muscular as he was during his Batman years, though he is still has a large build for a man his age and has been shown to still be fairly athletic if he has to be. He walks with a cane due to a limp in one leg, but the limp itself doesn’t seem too limiting most of the time.
Background/Personality: At age 8, Bruce Wayne saw his parents shot in front of him in a mugging-gone-wrong. This event became the driving point for the rest of his life, as he swore to eliminate crime and corruption so no one would have to suffer like he did. He never stopped honoring his parents, to the point where even in his 80s he returned to Crime Ally to leave roses on his parents’ death spot.
Bruce trained for years to become Batman, and donned the costume to fight crime in Gotham City. For his entire life, he carried a strong sense of justice, along with only one rule: he would never use lethal force on a criminal. He used his (huge) inheritance to fund his projects, creating many state-of-the-art gadgets to compensate for his lack of superpowers. He also raised a young orphaned circus boy named Dick Grayson as his sidekick Robin.
Several years after establishing himself as Batman, he teamed up with a group of fellow superheroes to form the Justice League. Batman and Robin, however, experienced conflicts, and Robin left his identity to become Nightwing and to work under his own rules. Batman always demanded nothing short of excellence from his partners, and Dick chafed under Bruce’s controlling nature. Batman took another Robin, the newly orphaned Tim Drake, and occasionally fought alongside Barbara Gordon, daughter of the police commissioner, as Batgirl. Batman split his time between his home city with his partners and working part-time for the JLU- he resisted becoming an official member, due somewhat to his paranoia and his issues working with a group.
One night, while out on patrol, Robin was captured by the Joker and Harley Quinn. For weeks, Batman and Batgirl searched for him, finally tracking him down to Arkham Asylum. There, they found Tim had been tortured by the Joker and turned into what the villains called “Joker Junior” as a surrogate son. During their fight, the Joker told Batman that Tim had revealed his secret identity, then tossed Tim a gun and told him to shoot Batman. At the last second, Tim turned the gun on the Joker, shooting and killing him.
Batman and Batgirl covered up the Joker’s death, and Tim received counseling from a trusted doctor, but Batman forbade his sidekicks from working again. His actions caused a serious hit to his relationship with the others, especially Batgirl, who he had been dating. Aside from the Justice League, Batman began to work solo.
Twenty years later, Batman was forced to design a high-tech Batsuit to compensate for his age and weakness. Despite the new suit, however, he couldn’t ignore his health problems completely, and one night suffered a heart attack while chasing down some criminals. In a moment of weakness, he threatened the criminals with a gun. They fled, but Bruce, disgusted by his actions and his violation of a life-long principle, decided enough was enough and retired the Batman.
In his old age, Bruce grew more cynical and became even more untrusting, and holed himself up, hermit-like, in his mansion. He remained leader of his family’s corporation in name only, and the company morphed from a benevolent business to be much more unethical and concerned more with making a profit than doing the right thing.
Another twenty years later, a teenager named Terry McGinnis found himself in front of Bruce Wayne’s house surrounded by a gang of thugs. The elderly Bruce Wayne fought off most of the gang single-handedly, but his heart condition acted up again. When inside his house, Terry accidentally discovered the Batcave, along with Bruce’s secret identity.
Bruce kicked him out, but Terry returned with some damning evidence of the corruption at Wayne-Powers after his father was murdered for the information. When Bruce refused to do anything further than call the police, Terry stole the Batsuit to shut down the illegal operations. Despite their faulty start and one instance of Bruce shutting down the suit remotely, Bruce offered Terry the job of the second Batman. Terry provided the physical ability, while Bruce ran command from the Batcave, helping Terry with the detective aspects.
At some point in the past, the leader of CADMUS, a group strongly opposed to the presence of the JLU in the planet’s defense, recognized the importance of Batman’s job. She also realized that Bruce was growing older, and that the world needed a Batman. She began planning project “Batman Beyond,” a decision to recreate the creation of Batman to ensure the legacy would live on. She obtained a sample of Bruce’s DNA and began searching for couples with a similar psychological profile to the Waynes in the hopes of creating another Batman. She found one subject, and replaced his genetic material with Bruce’s DNA- this man was Warren McGinnis.
When their son was 8, she hired an assassin to kill the McGinnises and jumpstart the second Batman, but the assassin refused after getting close to the couple. They came to the conclusion that murdering someone to create another Batman would be a dishonor to the legacy they were trying to imitate. However, as fate would have it, Mr. McGinnis was killed later in life, and his son did become the next Batman.
Bruce correctly deduced that Terry was his biological son (if only because the McGinnises had blond and red hair while their sons had black). He chose to keep quiet about the information out of respect for the late Mr. McGinnis.
